WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR HOME QUARANTINE BASED TREATMENT FOR COVID-19?

Vulnerable individuals, like those over 55 years of age, or those with pre-existing ailments like hypertension, obesity, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney or liver disease, or those consuming immunosuppressants or steroids, of course, need to be treated with special care, in consultation with a medical expert at a speciality hospital.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS AND WHEN SHOULD THE PATIENT SEEK EMERGENCY HOSPITAL CARE DURING
HOME QUARANTINE?

The warning signs that a patient must report are persistent fever of over 101°F for 72 hours, breathlessness or fast breathing, blood in sputum, confusion, loss of consciousness and altered behaviour or severe abdominal pain with diarrhoea

IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC PRECAUTION THAT CAN BE TAKEN BY THE CAREGIVER?

People in contact with Covid-19 can also be prescribed HCQ tablets once a week for three weeks in accordance with ICMR protocol also wear mask and must follow strict social distancing and hand washing etiquettes.

HOW CAN BLOOD OXYGEN LEVELS BE MONITORED AT HOME?

Pulse oximeters available in the market do a decent job, and these can be used to monitor the levels every day, from the day of the diagnosis to at least the 14th day. The levels can be checked after a brisk walk of six minutes.

WHAT IS THE NORMAL BLOOD OXYGEN SATURATION LEVEL?

A healthy individual has a blood oxygen saturation of 99%-100% on room air.

WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY?

  • If you have a fever

  • If your blood oxygen saturation is too low

  • A pulse rate of more than 110 per min or oxygen saturation of less than 94% is a cause for concern and the patient may need to plan for hospitalization.

WHAT IF I’M NOT ELIGIBLE FOR HOME QUARANTINE?

WHO CAN TAKE HCQ TABLETS?

The caregiver and all close contacts of such cases should take Hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis as per protocol and as prescribed by the treating medical officer. Please do not take any medications without consulting your doctor first.

WHEN CAN YOU DISCONTINUE HOME ISOLATION?

After 17 days of onset of symptoms (or date of sampling, for pre-symptomatic cases) and no fever for 10 days.

SHOULD I GET TESTED AGAIN AFTER THE HOME ISOLATION PERIOD?

There is no need for testing after the home isolation period is over.

WHEN DO YOU SEEK EMERGENCY CARE/HOSPITAL CARE?

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Persistent pain/pressure in the chest

  • Developing bluish discolourations of lips/face
